The Law of Two Feet
As readers or followers of this site, you guys know that I read…a lot.
You probably also know that I host several different Meetups and facilitate workshops on subjects ranging from business innovation to creative confidence to designing your dream job.
As I read through all the different articles and books, I am always trying to find the little nuggets of gold that I can apply somehow apply to my own life and/or business.
Recently, I have been digging into the topic of Purpose Driven Leadership and Open Space Technology (OST).
As I was learning more about it, and going through some different case studies, I came across part of the process that really struck a chord with me.
The concept is called “The Law of Two Feet” and once I read about, I instantly saw how powerful it was and how it could be applied to not only leadership scenarios but how we, as Life Designers, could also apply it as we attempt to design a truly KICKASS life for ourselves.
The Law of Two Feet
So what is this oh so powerful “Law of Two Feet” that I speak of?
Well, it goes like this…
“If at any time during our time together you find yourself in any situation where you are neither learning nor contributing, use your two feet, go someplace else.”
It is usually used in the context of company meetings (especially those boring as F*UCK meetings that your higher ups usually make you attend for no good reason at all) and basically says that when participants lose interest and get bored in a meeting, event, or breakout session, or accomplish and share all that they can, the charge is to move on, the “polite” thing to do is going off to do something else.
By implementing this “law”, all meeting participants are given both the right and the responsibility to maximize their own learning and contribution, which assumes only they, themselves, can ultimately judge and control.
Simply put, the Law of Two Feet says: “Don’t waste time…If you aren’t learning or contributing use your two feet to take you to a place you will”.
Think about that for a minute or two and let it sink in.
How f*cking powerful is that?
Especially if we can remember it and religiously apply it in all areas of our life.
APPLyING (and TWEAKING) “The LAW OF TWO FEET” TO LIFE DESIGN
But, as Life Designers, let’s tweak the law a bit so that it fits our needs a little better.
As a matter of fact, let’s create and use what we will call “The Life Design Law of Two Feet”.
Can we do that?
Of course we can. We don’t need permission.
I mean it’s our party, isn’t it?
So, The Life Design Law of Two Feet is this…
“If, at any point, place or situation in your life, you don’t find yourself learning, growing, contributing, or being fulfilled and happy, take the responsibility to use your two feet to take you to a place where you will.”
If you don’t like a certain part of your life or a situation that you are in DON’T SIT AROUND AND BITCH AND MOAN ABOUT IT.
Apply our new law, and use your two feet to move to a better place.
If you don’t like your job…apply the law and find a new one.
If you don’t like where you live….apply the law and MOVE.
If you don’t like a relationship (business or personal) that you are in….apply the law and get out.
The point is this.
YOU have the power to change things, but sometimes we overlook the easiest strategy to implement the change we so desperately seek.
Oftentimes, it’s as easy as making a conscious decision to walk away from the bad and move towards the better.
DON’T STAY PUT!
Whatever your situation, just remember that you aren’t a TREE!
